Packing Tip on How to Pack for Moving Home

There seems to be so much to remember when moving home in York, from switching over utilities to ensuring the “old” house is properly cleaned and left for new tenants or owners as it should be. One of the largest tasks for any move however has to be the packing.

Packing is time consuming, takes up space, requires you to buy or source boxes and materials and has to be done in good time for the York removal company to pick everything up. In order to avoid breakages and to ensure move days is as easy on everyone as possible these tips for packing smaller items should be printed off and attached to your checklist clipboard.

Organise Effective Packing Materials

It isn’t necessary to pay over the odds for fancy packaging materials. What you do need though is plenty of packaging, sturdy boxes, tape and a marker pen. Collect suitably-sized boxes from Freecycle, supermarkets or beg and borrow them from friends and family. What size box you will need for your smaller items will depend on their weight and how fragile they are so consider this carefully.

Bubble wrap, tape, scissors, scrap paper and newspaper as well as old clothes are always useful for packing smaller items.

Place Heavy Items at the Bottom

Often smaller items tend to be easier to break items and therefore it makes sense when packing to place heavier items at the bottom of a packing box and then adding smaller ones securely on top. This stops items being crushed or flattened.

Wrap Effectively

Packing for a York move is a laborious task and often a boring one. Don’t be tempted to skip corners however as items that are not packed properly will undoubtedly end up damaged. Use bubble wrap and assorted soft yet protective packaging materials to individually wrap small items. To avoid newsprint on packed belongings use tissue paper or similar between the pieces to be packed and the newspaper padding.

Items of clothing make brilliant wrapping materials and of course clothes need to be packed anyway. Use old tops and similar to add extra cushioning on top of and around smaller items.

Mark Boxes Properly

As well as ensuring that each box is securely fastened and labelled with the room it needs to be delivered to make it clear if a box holds fragile items. Some do this using their marker pen while others buy rolls of hard to miss ”Fragile” printed tape from places such as Ebay. These labels act as an effective visual reminder for those handling boxes to be extra careful. They also help movers decide where best to stack the smaller items.

If despite these top tips you simply can’t face the idea of packing up your home it might be wise to consider a removal company who will pack for you, as well as move your items to your new location.

Excellent Service! I would highly recommend them. We forgot to confirm our removal via email. The day of the removal I woke up at 4.30am with a doubt I realize that the removal firm was indeed not confirmed (my fault). I called the manager Dale who managed to save the day by organising a last-minute team. The guys did a fantastic job, dismantling/reassembling an expensive ottoman bed and taking it up to the second floor through an incredibly tight staircase without a scratch. They wrapped and protected everything, also items which really didn't need any protection. Everything has been moved without a scratch to the furniture and the premises. And the price was not even comparable to other moving companies in York. I have been charged lucrative quotes from other companies, given that we did all the boxes, we had very few furniture (one king bed, a sofa, table and chairs) and the old and new places were just 3 roads away. I could not believe how different the quotes were and I could not understand how to justify such a huge difference. We eventually decided to take the "risk" to go with 1 Van 1 Man Removals who quoted us a fraction of the others. I am so pleased we decided to go with them, I cannot imagine what more they could have done! Highly recommended. Just remember to confirm your booking by email.
