Moving home in York is reputedly one of the most stressful experiences you will go through. It doesn’t matter how many times you move, each situation is unique and every move needs to be handled with the same level of care, attention and good humour.
There is nothing worst come moving day, once you’ve got past the packing, the arranging and are ready to go than to be held up because of something lost, forgotten or simply not “right”. Avoid moving day inconveniences by using this checklist as a reference to keep things moving smoothly throughout the day.
A successful York removals day is all about timing and so make sure you are clear what time the removal team will arrive, how long they expect the loading and unloading to take and that other parties such as estate agents, landlords or the cleaning crew know when they should be there. Delays cost time and money so it is important to check and re-check that everyone knows where they should be and when.
This box will be what keeps you, your family and any helpers happy and motivated. Pack flasks of coffee and tea, sandwiches, crisps and biscuits (nothing messy) so that everyone has enough energy to plough through what needs to be done. Include bins bags, carriers, the first aid kit, extra tape and pens for packing repairs and whatever you do don’t forget to include toilet roll. Phone chargers should definitely be included in the essentials box. Running out of any of these items will cause delays and possibly a tantrum or two.
Make sure you have cash on you for moving day. This could be for extra supplies, to pay anything needed or for ordering a much deserved takeaway for tea at the new house. This will save you running around looking for a cash point as not everyone accepts card payments.
Having your landlord on the doorstep tapping his or her foot waiting while you frantically look for all of the house keys to hand over is not the best end to a relationship. Similarly ensure that you either have the keys for the new place in hand or have confirmed what time the estate agency will be there to hand them over to eliminate the risk of everyone having to wait around.
Bored children who are trying to help will only get in the way when moving. Ensure that they have backpacks each filled with toys, games and activities to keep them occupied while everything is loaded up, when travelling to the new location and in the other house. The TV and internet is unlikely to be set up on the first day so making sure they have plenty to do will make life a lot easier for yourself and of course more pleasant for them. If children can stay with a relative during the day all the better and the same applies to pets.
With some extra though and planning movers may easily eliminate the little inconveniences which are most unwelcome on moving day.
