When planning your York home move it is wise to consider the new area you’ll be moving in to. This is true whether you are simply researching the area or if you’ve already committed yourself to the move so use this checklist to ensure that you are fully prepared and in the know.
If you have a family, plan on starting a family or fancy undertaking courses yourself it is important to check out the availability of educational places and the quality of the local schools. The Ofsted website is a good place to start as you may see the latest inspection reports for all of these establishments online as well as for childcare providers such as nurseries and child-minders.
Taking care of your health is of course important and so you must research what healthcare services are available locally, especially if you or someone in your family has a specific health need. Also consider local dentist, optician and chiropodist availability.
It is important before you move to research how easy it is to get from A to B in your new town, whether public transport is available and adequate and how long commutes to work or schools will take.
Make sure you know where the local shops are, whether there is a supermarket, a butcher or an organic greengrocer if that is what you need. Check online to see what supermarkets offer home delivery to an area too, especially if there isn’t the supermarket you prefer nearby. You’ll be very glad to know where the takeaway is on moving day so check this out in advance too.
There are a number of online resources which allow you to view latest statistical information relating to crimes committed in the area.
If you are a social butterfly, enjoy sports or enjoy getting out into the community it is wise to research in advance what opportunities are available. Community centres, tourist information centres, councils and leisure centres will all have information on these things and will be able to signpost you to additional sources of information.
How much council tax you pay and what services and facilities the council offer will depend on the area you are moving to. Information on all of this and more may be obtained by calling the council offices or visiting their website.
Some people like to live in urban, up and coming areas while others believe the more green the better. Whether an area is going to fit well with your lifestyle may come down to whether or not the area is planning a significant amount of development over the coming years. Again this information should be available from the council’s planning department.
If you attend a place of worship regularly it would be wise to research where the nearest church or religious building that supports your denomination or religious belief system is. For regular worshippers not having a church, chapel or temple nearby could be quite an issue.
There is a wealth of information available online and the more you know about the place you are moving to in advance the smoother those first few days and weeks will be.
