- DIY Tips for a New Home
Moving into your very own home for the first time or moving to a new one can pose a problem for those not familiar with DIY. Even if you are a dab hand with a drill there are still DIY tips and advice we’ll bring you that you can benefit from.
As we’ve moved lots of people in York and the surrounding areas, we know what every home owner and tenant should have handy in their tool kit on the day of the move.
Here’s a quick summary of what you may need to do and the tools you may need to have when moving into your new house.
On the day of the move you may need ladders for reaching a fuse box or adding light bulbs. You may also need to clear out a gutter or two if rain is forecast and the house has been empty for a while. Ladders, as you know, always come in handy but even more so in a new home as there are many new hard to reach areas that you may not have thought of.
They are also essential if you have miscellaneous boxes to store in a loft as almost everyone is short of storage space and ladders can ensure you get them out of the way quickly. Of course, we always have some with us on the van but we do recommend you buy a set for when we go home and a light bulb blows.
It’s always best to get shelves and pictures up sooner rather than later. It reduces the risk of damage while giving you extra space to store your belongings. A drill will become your best friend on the first day from fixing a squeaky door to putting your child’s bed back together.
It’s amazing just how many items need Alan keys. You may need them for your own furniture such as a bed or to access a boiler or cupboard. It’s always a good idea to keep a set on your own set of keys as these are notoriously easy to lose
If a house has been left empty for a while you may need to bleed the radiators before turning the heating on. That’s why we always suggest you have a radiator key in your tool box, especially in winter.
A tape measure can save a lot of time when deciding which items of furniture will go where, as it removes any unnecessary indecision and ensures everything fits as it should. It also helps you immediately gain privacy as the curtains can go up almost immediately as long as you know they’re the right size.
From fixing a leaking tap to turning the stopcock back on, you’ll find the adjustable wrench comes in very handy on the day of the move.
Are there any tools we’ve missed off the list? Let us know and we’ll add more based on your feedback.
