House removals are the job 1 Van 1 Man was built on. Dale Gosine founded the company in York in 2008, and the promise hasn't changed since: the people who quote your move are the people who turn up, carry your sofa down the stairs and put your bed back together at the other end. No subcontractors, no mystery crew, no surprises on the bill.
Home moves in York come in every shape. We've moved Victorian terraces on The Groves with stairs barely wider than a wardrobe, bungalows in Acomb, and new-builds out at Monks Cross. That covers first-time renters, families trading up, downsizers leaving a house they've lived in for decades, and landlords turning a flat round between tenancies. If you're still comparing companies for removals in York, here is exactly how our house moves work, including what they cost.
Home Removals in York by Our Own Crew, Never Subcontracted
Subcontracting is common in removals: you book one company and a stranger in an unmarked van arrives. We don't do that. Every house move is carried out by our own trained, uniformed team, so you know exactly who is in your home and who is responsible if anything goes wrong.
The vans are ours too. Our Luton vans and our low-loader are fully carpeted inside, so furniture doesn't scuff on bare metal. They run on air suspension, which gives your belongings a gentler ride, and every van is GPS-tracked 24 hours a day. Not sure what size you need? Our removal van size guide has the internal measurements.
What Every House Removal Includes as Standard
- Loading, transport and unloading by our own uniformed crew
- Furniture dismantling and reassembly (or dismantling only, if you'd rather rebuild it yourself)
- Carpeted, air-suspension, GPS-tracked vans
- Public liability and £10,000 Goods in Transit insurance on every move
- Extra pick-ups or drop-offs along the way, such as a stop at a relative's or a storage unit
One thing we don't do is pack your boxes. We'd rather say that now than let you find out on moving day. Our guide to packing boxes for a house move covers sizes, quantities and how to pack so nothing rattles.
House Move Costs in York, and Exactly How We Bill
House move pricing is simple: a van hire fee for the vehicle, then an hourly rate for the crew.
- £75 per hour for one mover (you lend a hand with the driver)
- £85 per hour for two movers
- Larger crews for bigger homes, priced on your quote
The hourly rate is the same Monday to Sunday, with no weekend premium. We aren't VAT registered, so there's no VAT to add on top. Billing runs in whole hours from when we arrive at your first address until the last item is unloaded, including any time spent waiting for keys. You pay the van hire fee by bank transfer as a deposit to secure your date, and the balance goes to the driver once the job is done.
How long a move takes depends on how much you own, not how many bedrooms you have. A four-bed house might only hold two bedrooms' worth of furniture, and a two-bed flat can be packed to the ceiling. That's why we ask for a rough list of your items before we quote. The better the list, the more accurate your price.
Moving on Completion Day? How We Handle a Chain
Completion day in a property chain happens all at once, and the money rarely moves when you'd like it to. We start as early as possible and aim to have the van loaded before the funds exchange, so when the keys are released we're ready to go. If the chain stalls, your belongings stay safe in a GPS-tracked van while the solicitors catch up.
Three Reasons Customers Come Back to Us
Experienced
We've been moving York households since 2008. We know which city-centre streets a Luton van can't get down, how the ResPark permit zones work, and where the medieval snickelways mean a longer carry from van to door. That knowledge saves time on the day, and time is what you're paying for.
Dependable
We work 9am to 7pm, seven days a week, and evening or out-of-hours moves can be arranged. Plenty of our reviews come from customers booking us for their second or third move, which matters more to us than any advert. Read them for yourself: 491+ five-star reviews on Google.
Careful
We recently moved a family from Haxby to Clifton. That meant dismantling their furniture, moving their fragile items safely and rebuilding everything at the new house, all finished in a single day. A job like that doesn't need a big fleet. It needs a crew that takes its time where it counts.
Need Storage or a Clear-Out as Well?
Not everything has to go to the new house. If your dates don't line up, we work hand in hand with Inner Space Stations on Layerthorpe for removals into storage, and we'll happily move your things to any facility you choose. For furniture you're leaving behind, our house clearance service in York is handled by us as a licensed waste carrier, so it isn't passed on to anyone else.
Moving on a tight budget? With our You Load self-removals service you load and we drive. Students can also see our student removals in York. If you want the detail on what our cover protects, it's all in removals insurance explained.
House Removals Across York, Yorkshire and the Rest of the UK
House removals around York are our daily work, from the city centre to Fulford, Strensall and Heworth. We regularly head further out too, to Harrogate, Malton and Scarborough. Moving further? Our national removals from York cover anywhere in the UK. You can also see every town on our Yorkshire removals coverage page.
Straight Answers Before You Book a House Move
How much does a house removal in York cost?
House removals start from £75 per hour for one mover or £85 per hour for two, plus a van hire fee. There's no VAT and no weekend premium. Send us a rough list of your items and we'll give you a clear, no-obligation quote.
How long will my house move take?
Move times depend on how much you're moving, not the number of bedrooms. A full four-bed house and a sparsely furnished one can take very different amounts of time, which is why we quote from your item list.
Do you pack boxes?
No, we don't offer a packing service. We do dismantle and reassemble furniture, and our packing guide will help you get boxes ready before we arrive.
Are my belongings insured?
Yes. Every move includes public liability and £10,000 Goods in Transit insurance. If your belongings are worth more than that, you'll need to arrange extra cover yourself.
Do you move at weekends or in the evening?
Yes. We work 9am to 7pm, seven days a week, at the same hourly rates Monday to Sunday. Out-of-hours moves can be arranged.
What about parking and ResPark permits?
Tell us about any parking restrictions when you book. Parking fines on moving day are the customer's responsibility, so it's worth arranging a permit or parking suspension in advance.
How do I secure my moving date?
Your date is secured once the van hire fee is paid by bank transfer as a deposit. The balance is paid to the driver when the move is complete.
Can I travel in the removal van?
No. Our insurance doesn't cover passengers, so you'll need to travel separately.
